A Key To The Past

Family. . .
where life begins and love never ends.

As many of you know I lost my precious grandfather in May of 2015.
It was quite unexpected and the absence of him in my life is still very real. . .
Shortly before grandpa passed away
he and my grandmother were in the process of selling their home.
The very home that held all my memories with them since I was a baby.
I remember spending Christmas in their home,
sleeping in the guest bedroom with my cousins,
and running down the stairs in the morning to see what was under the Christmas tree.
We enjoyed countless family gatherings in their home
and I spent hours upon hours of time organizing rooms with my grandma.

Indeed, memories were made in this home. . .
memories that will now remain in my heart for many, many years.

Their home sold and my mom kept the key to their front door.
A few months ago she blessed me with it
and I decided to use it in a special way. . .

I framed the key so that it's always out in the open where I can see it
and be reminded of the love and joy I found in my grandparents home.

This is how I made it, sweet friends. . .

I used an old frame and thick cardstock.

I covered the card stock with vintage eyelet fabric.

I tied some satin seam binding onto the key
and did the same thing with a watch embellishment.
I glued the ends of the seam binding onto the top edge of the card stock.

Then, I applied layers upon layers of lace near the top corner.

Pretty buttons were also added to the top corner.

A Grandparent is one
who strengthens you with prayer,
blesses you with love,
and encourages you with hope.

Love and time. . .
those are the only two things in all of life
that cannot be bought,
but only spent.

A sweet little bow was added to the bottom corner of the frame.

Along with the bow I added pearls, shabby rose trim,
and delicate lace.

When someone you love becomes a memory
that memory becomes a treasure.

The key to the past can unlock so many precious memories. . .
I am truy thankful for the memories the Lord gives to us.

Blessings and sweet hugs to you, friends!

I completely understand this because I loved and miss my maternal grandparents so much
I lived with them from age 5-14 and thought I would die when they did, They were my rocks in life besides God

I wish I had the key to my grandparents door however back then we never locked a door in our house

I just love what you did with that key! A few years ago we sold our home of 35 years, it held so many memories. I never thought to save the key...now I wish I had. It's okay though, I still have the key in my heart.

Absolutely beautiful and such treasured memories. I absolutely adored my grandmother and still miss her! She passed away in the 60's and left a huge void in my life. My grandfather died when I was about 3 so I don't remember him...I so wish I did! We lived with them for about 2-1/2 yrs and then my mother remarried and we moved.

Thank you for sharing!

Stephanie, your ability to create beauty out of simple things amazes me. I had tears in my eyes reading this post. I am like you, I like to keep trinkets from those I love. Just a look or touch can bring back a flood of memories. Of course, the greatest memories are hidden in your heart. Nothing can take away the inheritance of beautiful memories they have left within you. Thank you for another beautiful post.

Red Rose Alley said...

My dear Stephanie, just wanted to mention to you that the symbolic meanings were not with connection to their color, just some meanings of the rose in general. I wish I had the time to see the meanings of the different colors of roses, wouldn't that be nice? But the only one I know is the red rose, love.

Your memory board is so pretty. The key and the clock and the lace all make it so special. How wonderful that you took your grandparents key and made it something of your very own with the pearls and ribbon. This looks so vintage and lovely and something that will be a reminder of your grandparents in years to come.

Your post hit home for me today as I've been thinking of my own parents. You see, my brother owns their home and he's selling their house after all these years. It's hard to keep up with any more, since he has a home of his own. These homes will be left behind, but we will always have the memories of our dear ones greeting us at the door with a smile on their face. What a beautiful post, Stephanie, and it made me feel much better.

love, ~Sheri

Stephanie, I know how much you miss him. This is such a lovely and positive way to hold onto the memories of your grandparents home. The key itself is very pretty and you have presented it so adorably. That will definitely become an heirloom!
I think in future times, you be able to remember that house and the associated good times in more detail because of this project.
Funny the things that stick in our minds about places dear to us...I remember the exact clunk of the front door closing in our first little home (which we called Rose Cottage), can still hear it in my mind...and that was thirty-four years ago!!

Sweet blessings, dear friend ~
