Celebrating My Beloved Mother

My dear friends,
as many of you know today is Mother's Day
and I want to wish each and every one of you mother's
a most beautiful and blessed day!

I always struggle with what to share on Mother's Day
simply because I know this day is not easy for many.
I know there are women out there
that never had a close relationship with their mom
and Mother's Day can be difficult.

I also understand there are ladies
who have tried to have a precious baby of their own
only to find their arms empty on Mother's Day.
I can sympathize with you because after my first child
I have never been able to have another one
which is something I leave with the Lord.

I know some of you have lost your mother
and that pain you face truly breaks my heart.

The point is. . .
there are numerous reasons
for Mother's Day being a difficult day
and I am sincerely sorry for those reasons.
By celebrating my mother
I am not trying to rub salt on any open wounds or hurts. . .

I have been blessed with a most amazing mother
and I can't help but celebrate her on this Mother's Day.

A mother's love is unlike any other kind of love.
Its expression and depth cannot be matched
for it is a gift from God.
- Author Unknown -

The quote above is oh-so-true
and even at 31 years of age I have known that kind of love
day in and day out.
My dear mom has never left my side
and as I have grown older she has become my best and closest friend.
She is there for me when happy moments roll my way
and she is always by my side when I need a shoulder to cry on.

My mom has always nurtured and loved me through thick and thin,
and when it was time to grow up she let go of my hand
and gently encouraged my steps into adulthood.

My mom is selfless to the very core.
She is gentle and kind by nature.
She loves without limits
and that love flows from her soul and heart onto everything she touches.

My mother is one-of-a-kind
and quite often I thank the Lord for allowing me to be her daughter.
I am blessed beyond measure
to have such a godly and beautiful woman in my life,
and on this Mother's Day I want her to know what a precious gift she is to me.

To the world you are a mother,
but to me you are the world.

My mom's favorite hymn is "Day By Day"
and I thought today would be the perfect day
to share the words to this hymn along with the story behind it.

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find, to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He Whose Name is Counselor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.
- Lina Sandell Berg -

"Day By Day" was written by a young Swedish woman
who learned early in her life the all-important lesson
of living each day with the conscious presence and strength of her Lord.
Lina Sandell Berg has often been called the
"Fanny Crosby of Sweden"
for her many contributions to gospel hymnody.
From her pen flowed approximately six hundred and fifty hymns
that strongly influenced the waves of revival
that swept the Scandinavian countries during the latter half
of the nineteenth century.

At the age of twenty-six Lina had an experience
that greatly influenced her life.
She was accompanying her father aboard ship
to the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, across Lake Vattern.
The ship gave a sudden lurch and Lina's father,
a devout Lutheran minister,
fell overboard and drowned before the eyes of his devoted daughter.
Although Lina had written many hymn texts
prior to this tragic experience,
now more tan ever poetic thoughts that expressed a childlike trust in her Lord
began to flow freely from her broken heart.

but whose place no one else can take.

That is a wonderful tribute to your mom and your post is very sensitive to those who have a difficult Mother's Day. I had an ideal mom who died when I was 23. I enjoy this day because of my thoughtful sons who always bring me flowers.

Happy Mother's Day blessings to you, sweet Stephanie, for honoring your own lovely mom with such a beautiful post. Thank you for sharing your mom's favorite hymn, and the story behind it. Also, thank you for being ever so kind and gentle with words for those who may experience a difficult time on Mother's Day. No matter what, all women in some form or fashion, may be a mother to pets, nieces, nephews, or mother through their teaching, etc. I hope you have a beautiful day, and I'm sending love and hugs your way.

What a sweet and glorious tribute to your mother. I am mother to 3 and grandmother to 3 but today it's very hard for me as a daughter. I am an only child who lost her dad 2 years ago on Valentine's Day. Mom and Dad were married 63 years. Mom had a stroke at Dad's funeral and passed the next day. So, I lost them both 6 days apart...and even though it's been nearly 3 years and I know they are waiting for me and I'll see them again, my heart still very broken. I miss my Mom so very much. Your sweet post has brought tears to my eyes, but they are tears of joy. Blessings...thank you.

Happy Mothers Day to you Stephanie and your dear mother Debbie.
As always a sweet post to read.
I am glad that we both have a very good relationship with our mothers.

This is all so beautiful, what a lovely heart of compassion and love you have. You didn't need to tell me you had a good mother, I can see it in the way you are in the world. Happy Mother's Day :-)

This is the most beautifully written tribute as to why we celebrate Mother's Day. I was just thinking this morning as I was getting ready for church that although there is sorrow for some on this day and just recently read an article suggesting to pastors to stop honoring mothers during church services because of the effect it might have on some, I had to disagree somewhat with that. You addressed this issue perfectly in this post. You and your dear mother, Debbie are both precious jewels shining brightly in a dark world and Blogland is blessed by your presence! May you both enjoy the day together along with the rest of your loved ones...Mother's Day hugs to you both!♥

That is a wonderful tribute to your mother. I very much appreciated Lina's story. What a difficult thing to have lived through and still to keep her faith. I am not familiar with your mother's favorite hymn; now I must go search for the melody. So curious I am.

Oh, what a lovely precious tribute to your dear, precious mother! I have not met her in person, but our many in-depth email conversations have revealed her kind, sweet-to-the-core heart to me. She has reached out to me so many times when I have been walking through fiery trials, and she has prayed for me and my burdens so faithfully. She is a Godly woman with a very rare and precious soul...and so are you, my dear friend. You are a mirrored reflection of your beautiful, dear mother, and I am ever so blessed to have the presence of both of you in my life. Sending much love to both of you today on this wonderful Mother's Day!!!! Please don't ever feel bad to share your heart about your dear Mom...regardless what we readers are facing, the fact is, your dear mother should be celebrated!

You do indeed have a lovely mother, and the love you have for each other is very precious. Yes, Mother's Day can be difficult for some. I remember some sad days when I was going through miscarriages. But like Debby Ray said, while we can be sensitive to others, we also want to celebrate. We weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. And today is a day to rejoice and thank the Lord for precious moms like yours. Happy Mother's Day to you Stephanie. I know you are a wonderful mom yourself! xo Deborah

Unfortunately I am one who never had a close relationship with my mother, by her choosing. As I saw photos of mothers and daughters across FB this morning I thought how sad I don't have one. However, I made sure I have a good relationship with my two daughters and can't imagine otherwise.
Your mother is a sweet woman and you are an image of her kindness and glowing personality Stephanie. This tribute to Debbie is heart warming and in each of your roles, you lead by example.
Blessings to you on this day celebrating mothers.

Happy Mother's Day, Stephanie. Heartache and joy often march side-by-side in life, and this is never more evident than on a day that celebrates mothers. Your tribute to your own mother is sweet. Many blessings.

I agree...your Mom is a wonderful lady! I am always blessed by both of your blogs. In the apartment building where I live, there are elderly ladies whose children never come by or call. It has been a sad day for them.

A Christian Mother is such a great blessing. I love to read of the blessing yours was. Mine was as well, and though I miss her, I know she is awaiting in heaven.
I never knew the story behind Day by Day. It adds a whole new meaning!

What a sweet tribute to your beautiful mother I lost my own mother 13 years ago. She was such an encourager and never failed to tell me she loved me. The thing I miss the most was her intercessory prayers for her family and friends. Thank you for this special gift you have given your mom! Love,Lynn

Yes, it's a day I have great difficult with, and usually, I can let these types of things slide past me. But when I am reminded of her, I burst into tears. I literally woke up this morning thinking, "I'm glad Mother's Day is over."

But hail to all the women of the world who have had the opportunity to give birth and share the joys of motherhood with their mothers who are still with them. BLESS YOU, Stephanie!

And, my dear, your mother is the tops! I truly love that woman, and looks like you are certainly following in her footsteps!

So beautifully written, Stephanie! This brought tears to my eyes, remembering how much I loved my Mother, now gone for 20+ years (I think of her every day), and how blessed I feel that my two sons are so close to my heart. I loved reading the hymn and the story behind it. . .I am off in search to find a video, because I don't think I know the melody. Very lovely!

What a beautiful Mother's Day card you have posted. It is so sad to think of those who grew up without a kind, caring, loving mother. We are so fortunate, aren't we. It is easy to tell that you had a wonderful mother. You must be a lot like her.

Beautiful post, yes Mother's day is a great day and also a day of sadness, not only is my mom gone but she passed away on Mother's day. For some reason even though she has been gone for 15 years now and it seems like yesterday this Mother's day was very hard.
I too was blessed with just one child as much as I had longed for more, lost one to stillborn and 2 miscarriages, it makes me so thankful for the one that God blessed me with and going through all of that my heart goes out to those that can't have any children.
You have a loving and godly mother and she has passed that on to you :)

I know this post comes very, very late, but still! It touched my heart this morning, what a precious tribute to your mother, such an amazing woman of God that she is! And you are so right, so many find Mother's Day to be a very difficult day, for different reasons, and your words at the beginning I'm sure touched the hearts of women who aren't as blessed as you to have such an amazing mother. And to mention that infertility is a struggle you have as well, it seems that even in our blessings, there is always sorrow mixed in there too, and just as your mother's favorite hymn shares... we just have to trust HIM day by day. Many times we don't understand His plan, but we can rest assured safely in His care that He has our best interests in mind. This is a beautiful post, written so powerfully! Hugs to you today dear friend!
