O Jesus, I Have Promised

I asked the New Year
for some motto sweet,
Some rule of life
by which to guide my feet.
I asked and paused;
it answered soft and low,
"God's will to know."
- Unknown -

O Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end;
be thou forever near me,
my Master and my friend.
I shall not fear the battle
if thou art by my side,
nor wander from the pathway
if thou wilt be my guide.

O let me feel thee near me!
The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
the tempting sounds I hear;
my foes are ever near me,
around me and within;
but Jesus, draw thou nearer,
and shield my soul from sin.

O Jesus, thou hast promised
to all who follow thee
that where thou art in glory
there shall thy servant be.
And Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end;
O give me grace to follow,
my Master and my Friend.
- John E. Bode -

I with Thee would begin,
O my Savior so dear,
on the way that I still must pursue;
I with Thee would begin every day granted here,
as my earnest resolve I renew-
To be and remain Thine forever.
- From the Swedish -

The beginning of the new year
is usually a time for reflecting on and evaluating the past
as well as for setting serious goals for the future.
Because it is so easy to get caught up in a blur of daily sameness,
special days and events are important in life.
We need these highlights for our growth and development.

Dear friends,
let us think seriously about ways in which our spiritual life
can be deepened and developed during this coming year.

 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love,
which ye have shewed toward his name,
in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence
to the full assurance of hope unto the end.
- Hebrews 6:10-11 -

If any man serve me, let him follow me;
and where I am, there shall also my servant be:
if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
- John 12:26 -

Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance:
for ye serve the Lord Christ.
- Colossians 3:24 -

Have a most blessed Lord's Day, sweet friends!
Much love to you!

What a lovely way to start my day, dear Stephanie, by reading this post. I have not had the opportunity to sit and write out my hopes and desires and prayers for the coming year, but hope to do so this afternoon. "A Closer Walk with Thee" always needs to be at the top of the list as you have so gently reminded us. xo Deborah

I normally would not be online on Sunday morning to read your lovely post but our church was cancelled due to snow and COLD weather. How wonderful it was to read this this morning! Yes, I as well, need to get my mind and heart in gear after all of the holiday hubbub. Thank you for this most heartfelt reminder. Have a fantastic Sunday, Stephanie! ♥

Your Sunday posts are like a breath of fresh air to me, Stephanie. Such heartwarming words every time. Your pink doily reminds me of the one my grandmother made. It is the only one I have left of hers, and I use it for my hot drinks while visiting sweet blogs, like yours. :)

Have a relaxing Sunday, dear. It's raining hard here!

love, ~Sheri

Great post to start the year off, examine our lives and how we are following our Lord, are we following his will or our own, growing with him or away from him. Growing in his wisdom and love for each other. Praying our country can come together over this coming year ahead. Your hearts are just beautiful!

Dearest Stephanie, what a precious hymn of old I still remember singing in church. We don't sing the hymns anymore, and it's sad. But I shall treasure them always. And some day we shall sing new praises to Him when we are with Him forevermore. Yes, you've struck a chord in my heart that I've been feeling about new goals and ways to honor God with my time and talents. May He continue to guide each of us. Wishing you a joy-filled year serving and glorifying our Savior God...the King! Warm hugs and love, precious friend! xoxo
