What Is Life?

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.
For what is your life?
It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time,
and then vanisheth away.
- James 4:14 -

What is life? ’tis but a vapor;
Soon it vanishes away;
Life is but a dying taper;
O my soul! why wish to stay!
Why not spread thy wings, and fly
Straight to yonder world of joy?

See that glory—how resplendent!
Brighter far than fancy paints;
There, in majesty transcendent,
Jesus reigns—the King of saints:
Spread thy wings, my soul! and fly
Straight to yonder world of joy.

Joyful crowds, His throne surrounding,
Sing with rapture of His love;
Through the heavens His praises sounding,
Filling all the courts above:
Spread thy wings, my soul! and fly
Straight to yonder world of joy.

Go, and share His people’s glory,
Mid the ransomed crowd appear;
Thine a joyful, wondrous story,
One that angels love to hear:
Spread thy wings, my soul! and fly
- Thomas Kelly -

Life on earth is but a vapor,
Soon we’ll lay these bodies down;
But if we continue faithful,
We shall wear the victor’s crown—
Brighter than the stars of heaven,
Brighter than the dazzling sun,
We shall shine among the ransomed,
When our work on earth is done.
- Wm. G. Schell -

Oh, joyful day to the faithful soul
Who walks with Christ in His purity!
Life’s battle fought and the vict’ry won,
He shouts from time to eternity.
Eternity! Eternity!
Will you dwell with Christ in eternity?
- Daniel S. Warner -

May you have a blessed Lord's Day, friends!

How fitting this post is for me as I just went to a memorial service yesterday for a girlfriend's father. Oh, what a celebration for a life well lived and then going on to Glory!

Beautiful words to encourage us and remind us that we are only here for a little while and then we go to our real home. Hugs.

Amen to a lovely post. Reminds me of 1 John 3:3 When he shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as he is.

This is a very fitting post as I just heard from my SIL that her sister passed suddenly at the age of 58. We just never know.
I love the dandelions in this - also very fitting!

Dearest Stephanie, this resonated with me as well. I recently lost a dear cousin, five years younger than I. Yes, soon we lay down our Earthly bodies. But hopefully not today, in my case :) Love, Mimi xxx

I have had a few reminders of this this past week. My hubby is conducting THREE funerals this week! Another friend is facing breast cancer. So often we let life just consume us -- the little things I mean not realizing how brief this time on earth is and how we should make the very most of the days the Lord gives us. Thanks for another lovely, thought-provoking post.

You can even make a dandelion look lovely!!
You have a deep question for your blog post title... For me it is a day to day struggle to be more like Jesus every day, I don't always go in the correct direction but thankfully he loves me and gives me another day to walk with him!

What a lovely heart you have for the Lord! Came here from your mom's blog and am now following.

I love that thought: Eternity. Eternity.
Oh yes, to be in His presence forever is a longing of my heart.

Oh, precious Stephanie, I love this post and the appropriate dandelion that reminds us how quickly they are here and blow away...poof! It's a good reminder for me to make the best use of my time here, and we too celebrated the life of a precious friend and pastor who is now with the Lord and who we know heard the worlds, "Well done, My good and faithful servant." May we all desire to hear those words and be cognizant of all we strive to do and accomplish each day. Much love and hugs!
